Using public domain is one of those little insider’s secrets that a lot of people use to legally steal content and tap into millions and millions of pages of material that you can use for anything you want without asking permission or paying for it.

What is Public Domain?

Public domain is material the public can use anyway they want. Public domain falls into 4 main categories:

  1. Generic information like facts, numbers, ideas, titles, blank forms, etc.
  2. Works granted or donated to the public domain. Although it may seem strange, sometimes copyright holders make their work freely available, without copyright, for anyone to use. One example of just such a donation is P.T. Barnum’s autobiography.
  3. Works by the government or its agents.
  4. Formerly copyrighted works that have fallen into public domain or lost their copyright due to a number of different situations.

Public domain can come in the form of comics, movies, books, music, art work, software, or any other intellectual property. Just think of all the possibilities!

When you add up all of the different sources of public domain information it comes out to millions and millions of pages of free information that you can use in any manner you choose.

How Can You Use Public Domain In Your Business?

The short answer is that you can use public domain for anything that you want to use it for!  You’re really only limited by your own imagination.

You can literally chop it up, use it completely intact, create derivative works based on it, combine it with other materials, etc.

So here are 8 awesome public domain ideas to get you thinking:

1.  Create A Digital Information Product.

This is probably the easiest method for taking advantage of public domain.   It’s also the most often used!

You can easily compile the material as is (or with a few slight edits) and turn it into an ebook. Then you can sell the ebook, give it away to subscribers, offer it as a backend, etc.

2.  Create A Physical Information Product.

Just as you can create a digital information product out of public domain, you can also create a physically delivered product, such as a book, pamphlet, booklet, etc. to sell on Amazon or in your own shopping cart system.

The biggest advantage in creating a physical product is that it may be more appealing to your niche or target market… especially if they’re less sophisticated.  In addition, physically delivered products can often command a highter price than ebooks or other digital media.

Be sure to think outside the box a little on this one…

Public domain material can be:

  • Read out loud into a a microphone and then record that onto CD’s
  • Divided into sections and turn that into a home study course
  • Or even re-packaged into a booklet or series of reports.

3.  Use Public Domain Products To Upsell Your Own Products.

Upselling is a really powerful strategy for increasing your revenue…  if you have additional products to offer.  Public domain can give you the opportunity to offer an *upgrade* to your customers.

Simply use a public domain product as it is or modify it slightly and you have a product to use in your upsell in no time.

4.  Create Articles Or Mini-Courses Out Of Public Domain Content.

People and online businesses are starving for great content, and public domain can help you give it to them!

You can literally slice up public domain material into smallter articles and distribute them online to gain traffic to your website. Article marketing is a great way to gain targeted visitors to your site… especially when the content actually comes from public domain works.

5.  Use Public Domain As A Bonus To Your Own Products.

Just like we talked about using public domain to upsell your products, you can also use it to create really great bonuses for your products.

People love bonuses, and sometimes they’ll even buy a product BECAUSE of the bonuses.   This creates a great opportunity to use public domain and create a really unique bonus!

6. Create A Product Based On The Public Domain Work.

Some people call these types of products derivative works.  All that really means is that you use the public domain material as the basis to create something completely different like a video, software, Cd, etc.

7.  Use Public Domain On Your Website As Content And Partner With Google AdSense To Generate Revenue.

Use the material you gather from public domain to create an information rich website.  Then place Google Adsense ads within the site. Every time someone clicks on the Adsense ads, you earn a percentage of that advertising revenue.

If done right this can add up very quickly and it’s a great way to profit from public domain!

8.  Use Public Domain To Increase Your Organic Search Engine Traffic.

As I said above, you can cut up public domain content into separate articles and distribute them, but you can also slice up public domain content to create articles for your own website and get some great organic search engine traffic.

The number one reason people go online is for information research, so be sure to use great keywords and then create website content based on public domain material infused with those keywords.

When you post keyword and content rich webpages to your site, the search engines will rank you higher and more of those targeted visitors will find you.

There are tons and tons of other ways that you can utilize public domain works, but hopefully this will give you some idea of the possibilities.
