Top 3 Stupid Facebook Marketing Mistakes
Facebook is a great social network to use in your social marketing toolbox, if you do it the right way. Unfortunately there are waaaay too many people who don’t have a clue how to effectively promote their businesses using Facebook.
If you’ve spent any time on Facebook, then you’ve probably already seen too many bad social marketing offenses to count… I know I have!
So here are what I consider to be the top 3 most stupid Facebook marketing mistakes:
1. Saying too much in your friend request.
I have several different accounts on Facebook and it always amazes me how many people do “in your face” marketing when they send you a friend request. Let me explain…
When you click on the “add as a friend” box, you have the option of including a personal message.
Most people don’t bother with including a personal message, then just send the request. Others will write some kind of reference so that you know why they are requesting you (we’re in the same group, I like your blog, we have similar interests, etc.).
However, about 5% of my friend requests will send me something like this:
“They say opportunity only knocks once. Well it’s knocking, so let me in so I can help you get on the road to success.”
“Join me now in XYZ company… we’re making millionaires!
http://www.link-to-promotion-page.com“
“Come and join me at PeopleString where you get paid to network!
http://www.link-to-signup-page.com“
YUK! Do you think I’m going to add any of these people???
Of course not!
Facebook is about networking with people who are interested in you and the things that you write about. It’s about building rapport and establishing a relationship.
When you ask someone to connect with you on Facebook, it’s kind of like introducing yourself at a party. You don’t walk up to someone, shake their hand, and then immediately try to recruit them into your business or sell them your product.
You shouldn’t do that on Facebook either.
2. Using a promotional image in profile.
I NEVER add people as friends if they use a promotional image as their profile image. It tells me that they are only there to make a sale and that they aren’t REALLY interested in establishing relationships.
They are just opportunists.
In my experience, these types of people send tons of junk email, spam my wall, and bother me ceaselessly without any type of meaningful interaction.
From a business perspective, it makes no sense for me to try to connect with people like that… it’s a waste of my time if I’m not connecting with real people.
3. Spamming other people’s walls.
This is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. I absolutely hate it when people spam my wall with advertising for their opportunity, business, or product.
It’s my wall.
If you want to talk to me, then I would love for you to leave a comment, but my wall doesn’t exist to be a billboard for your advertising!
And the same goes for fanpages and group pages… NO SPAM!
As a matter of course, I usually “un-friend” people who spam me and delete their posts. I just don’t want to deal with people like that.
And that’s my Top 3 List… do you have any stupid Facebook marketing mistakes that you think should be in the top 3?

Well done Arvada! I fall into the category of not saying much at all (nothing0 in friend requests. Thanks!
Here’s another one of those cases of saying too much in the friend request that I got today:
“Are you tired of working the 9 to 5 job? If you are this is a way out http://www.xxxxx.com. if you like what you see Inbox me!”
Ridiculous!!!
Thanks, Arvada, for reminding everyone the proper etiquette on using FB, especially for adding friends. I prefer to add friends with a short message of why I’m interested in adding them and prefer that others do the same with me but most people don’t do that. To each his own. I’m like you, though, I WILL NOT add anyone who asks me to join their business before even meeting them.
Here’s a really long friend request I got today:

Good Job Avada,
I was on facebook, hoping to get some help finding employment trying to network. I also used it to try it to put some of my friend’s sites up there to help promote his business. I just put that info on my own wall. I have since gotten off facebook because of I was not happy with stuff that people were putting on my wall. Maybe I will get back on but I have to rethink my plan.

When people post their junky spam stuff on your wall… just delete it.
Facebook can be a great tool for connecting with others when it’s used the right way!
Thanks for your comments!
Hi Avada,
Facebook has become a confusing place. It used to be just for connecting with friends, now it has become a global marketplace. I would like to use it to appropriately market my services, but I’m worried about turning people off by doing that. Do you recommend setting up separate pages or groups for business purposes, or do you think it is okay to tastefully talk about your business on your own Wall?
Thanks for your post. I’m thrilled that we connected on The Unified Tribe.
Laurie
Hi Laurie!
For my own business, I do set up different pages for different things… I personally like groups because you can email your group periodically.
As far as offending others, I recommend applying The Golden Rule to Facebook… Treat others the way that you would like to be treated… and you won’t have any problems.
Do you like The Unified Tribe? I think it’s a great tool and puts me in touch with so many wonderful people like you!
Here’s another one… don’t do this:
“Hi Arvada Yates – I found you in a marketing group.. I thought I would say Hi, and see if you would become a friend of mine here..
Do you own any websites? or trying to make some money online? I joined a site about a month ago that has reviews hundreds of internet marketing products and services.. they also get great deals of upto 50% off regular prices.. Pass it on.. its a great site.

If you have any questions, please let me know… Nice to meet you by the way.”
NOT going to be YOUR friend!
Hi Arvada,
That was Awesome indeed. However, I just wanted to be sure I’m not guilty of the number 1 reason on your list. When I send Friend Request, here is what I say: (Let me know of your thoughts please)
Hi (Friend Name),
It’s great to connect with an Awesome individual as yourself here on Facebook. Keep a look out for my daily Motivational and Inspirational quotes. Also, feel free to view my personal website at http://www.JonGall.com. I pray that you continue to have a Prosperous and Blessed week. God Bless, JG
Is that considered a “turn-off” friend request message? Please let me know because I’d hate to think others have a negative view about it.
Thanks in advance,
~Jon Gall~
Hi Jon…
I don’t think this particularly offensive, but I think this type of message might be more appropriate for an email message after they’ve accepted your friend request.
That’s just my opinion… others might certainly disagree!
Great post Arvada! I’ve gotten some of those exact friend requests!
I had a good one on MySpace: Girl sends me a friend request saying…I never know what to write on these thingys. *No, I’m not kidding*. Out of curiousity I accepted it. Then she writes, Hi, check out my site, blah, blah. this is no joke! Of course I deleted it.
Thanks again!
